Trying to Adult RVA was created in October 2021 by Sam as a new hobby.  Her goal was to have fun and make new friends.  She planned a few events and posted them on Meetup in hopes some people might want to go do some of the things she wanted to do.  Turns out, a lot of people did!  Since then, hundreds of events have happened, and thousands of friendships have been made!  To learn more about Trying to Adult RVA, visit our About section.

Yes! Those that join Trying to Adult RVA are looking for friends and things to do in Richmond, Virginia. Many people come alone, and by the end of their first event, they have new friends! It can be scary coming to your first event alone, but many people have been in the same position and have so much fun. If you are feeling nervous, reach out to the event host/ambassador or any of our New Friend Leads!  They are excited to welcome you.  We also often have couples and small friend groups join as well.

Trying to Adult RVA is on Facebook, Instagram, Meetup, and we have this website!  Here is how we use each one:

Facebook: We have a Trying to Adult RVA Facebook group.  We use that to share upcoming events, create discussions, and foster new friendships (virtual and IRL).  The Facebook page is a great community and an awesome way to connect with other Trying to Adult RVA friends.

Instagram: We love sharing upcoming events and past event highlights via Instagram.  Follow us to be in the know of all the fun we have!

Meetup: We use Meetup to help with the execution of all our events.  If you are attending a Trying to Adult RVA event, we ask that you sign up for that event on Meetup.  There are event details, discussions, and host information all in one place.  We use Meetup to help manage event attendance, share comments on event specifics, and to message each other about events.

Website:  Our website is where you can find all the detailed information about Trying to Adult RVA and is where you go to claim tickets!  All of our events require tickets so you will need to come here to claim your spot whether there is a cost or it is free.

We try to make finding us as easy as possible because we know it can be a little awkward when you don’t know anyone yet.  The event host should have a Trying to Adult RVA sign with our logo placed somewhere around the meeting point you can look for.  Additionally, keep an eye on comments on the Meetup event page.  The host and/or other participants are helpful in describing where the meetup spot is at the location.  If you cannot find the group, send a message to the event host for help!

The Trying to Adult RVA leadership team works hard to ensure events are more than a meet up.  Our events are truly an experience and designed to help facilitate genuine friendships.  In addition to the many hours our leadership team invests in event planning and execution, there are many other expenses, some more apparent than others.  There are room rental costs, food & beverage minimums, event material costs, and other venue related expenses.  There are expenses that help make Trying to Adult RVA welcoming such as signs, business cards, materials for our leadership team, and more.  There are also “behind-the-scenes” costs such as our website, social media platform costs, credit card fees, taxes, and other business-like expenses.  There are more expenses than listed here which all contribute to making Trying to Adult RVA successful and help us achieve our mission.

Yes! Our New Member Socials are always free and many of our volunteer events are free.  When you become a Trying to Adult RVA member, you also unlock multiple free events every month. We try to make a diverse selection of events appealing to different interests and budgets.  With a group of this size, it can be difficult to find free options, however, we work hard to make low or no cost options available.  Free events do fill up very fast so be sure to stay on top of any notifications and/or sign up to become a Premium Member to receive early access to sign ups for upcoming events.

Trying to Adult RVA events are thoroughly planned. We ensure we have reserved space for the group. Without reserved space, it can be hard to mingle, find the group, etc. which makes the experience of making new friends even harder. Additionally, our events are large compared to your regular walk in customers. We want to be sure the businesses we support are prepared for us and have adequate space and staff to host us. With those things in mind, attendee limits are needed. However, waitlists are available and highly encouraged to join. Plans change and those on the waitlist are often eligible for spots as the event approaches!

For any event, your spot is only guaranteed after you claim a ticket from the Trying to Adult RVA website. Once all tickets are claimed, a waitlist is then created for an event.  As people offer up their tickets, spots are reopened.  Those spots are made available to whoever claims them first.  Be sure to turn on notifications to be the first to know when spots are reopened to those on the waitlist.

As a reminder, Meetup and our website don’t communicate in real time.  So, it might say you are “going” on Meetup but you will be soon moved to the waitlist if you do not have a ticket.

If an event says sold out, all tickets have been claimed. However, please keep an eye on social media as spots may open up as the events approaches. All participants must have a ticket via the Trying to Adult RVA website in order to attend an event.

It depends. We try to do our research on parking prior to the event as much as we can and post details on the event description so that you can be prepared!

Check out our Rules & Policies for more information on attendance and refunds!

Yes! We have so many options for future events but will gladly accept additional suggestions. Use this form to submit your idea.
